Date: July 2, 2002 To: Industry Trade Media FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST BROKERS LOGISTICS, LTD. CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY IN EL PASO Family-Owned Warehouse and Logistics Operation Celebrates Four Decades of Warehousing, Transportation and Specialty Services with Multiple Operations El Paso, Tex.--Jerry Wright peers out the loading dock of his 285,000 sq. ft. warehouse in east El Paso to survey the rail yards just south of Interstate 10, anticipating the next shipment. Over the last 25 years, Wright witnessed the failure of numerous operations within this industrial district. They sit idly in the distance, ghost buildings in the partially inhabited district of a 400-year-old community that has served as an international trade and transport hub since the 1700s. This industrial district, home to Brokers since 1962, now houses three separate operations for this sector of Brokers Logistics, a third-party logistics (3PL) provider of public and contract warehousing. Brokers Logistics acquired the current headquarters facility in 1998. Originally built in 1956, it has been expanded and refurbished to meet the ever-changing demands of an unpredictable industry. Forty-two dock doors, adjacent to the offices, accept and distribute the customers' diverse cargo. A few blocks away another facility houses a cross dock and transloading operation utilizing the rail-to-truck and truck-to-rail concept. A third facility close by maintains a highly secured document management and storage operation. In addition, Brokers Logistics has facilities on El Paso's west side that provide similar warehousing and transportation services. For forty years, the Wright family has honed the privately held company from an early food brokerage warehouse facility spearheaded by Jerry Wright, Sr., to a technologically advanced firm with multi-tasking capabilities and hundreds of employees. "We have worked hard to develop, maintain and grow our customer-base and to remain a strong, viable player in this world of mergers, acquisitions and buy-outs that put decision-makers thousands of miles away," said Wright, an El Paso native and past president of the Texas Warehouse Association. Now chief executive officer, he started at ground level to learn every aspect of the business he purchased from his father and other partners in 1996. Together, he and wife Michelle, the president of Brokers Logistics, have balanced the multi-million-dollar firm. Often meeting in a conference room lined with framed state flags chronicling Texas history, the duo works to manage the demands of marriage, family and business. "I started here 15 years ago," recalls Michelle. "Within that time frame, we've experienced incredible changes in the industry and our customer requirements. The economical downturns, drops in manufacturing orders, sluggish stock exchange and the ripple effects of last fall's terrorist attacks have taken their toll on the industry. "It's a daily challenge to keep abreast of and anticipate what may be necessary when a customer contacts us with their needs. We respond quickly and efficiently without ever compromising our levels of accuracy, quality service and competitive pricing. Everything is flexible. Everything is negotiable, except the highest service levels that have represented Brokers Logistics during these 40 years," she said. It's this attitude that has earned the firm a reputation for fighting to remain competitive, seeking solutions to customer problems, transforming its infrastructure and diversifying with the times. As one of the region's first companies certified for ISO-9002 quality, Brokers Logistics works with worldwide corporations and offers distribution for many local and international businesses. Services range from warehousing, transportation and transloading: truck-to-rail, rail-to-truck and truck-to-truck. Packaging, kitting and light assembly as well as massive secured document management (storage, retrieval and destruction) are some of the value added services performed for Fortune 500 companies. A reminder of its initial grocery supply days, climate-controlled warehousing for standard dry and food grade products is also available, as well as receiving of fourth party goods--returned retail items, termed reverse logistics, for customers such as small appliance manufacturers and large retail companies. In order to remain competitive and diversified, the company achieved certification as a U.S. Customs bonded storage facility and maintains an on-site customs broker who specializes in international trade protocols. This type of operation enables Brokers Logistics to assist importers with inventory management, inspections, repackaging and destruction within the U.S. without expending the duty taxable to the imported products. Detailed attention to protecting the valuable is evident in the measures taken to guard every aspect of Brokers customer's property. In order to maintain safety for the hundreds of millions of dollars in customer products, supplies and records, Brokers Logistics employs security guards who man their stations 24/7, as well as electronic fire and burglary detection equipment and in-rack sprinkler systems. Specially constructed fireproof areas protect the valuable documents while computerized information systems and on-line communications assure immediate response when needed. Brokers Logistics has also implemented a corporate-wide disaster recovery plan, which is frequently updated in order to assure everyone remains prepared for any kind of natural or unnatural event. "We take no chances," said Michelle. "Every step possible is taken to ensure that facilities are secure, property is protected and operations remain uninterrupted. We've taken proactive, preventive measures to avoid any kind of threat to any aspect of our operations. We have to in order to preserve the integrity of our customer relationships and our organization." With hundreds of customers coast to coast, the Wrights know first-hand the value of total customer focus. Jerry explains that Brokers Logistics established its customer base by developing relationships built on trust and creating loyalty that lasts. Those characteristics are what he credits to their longevity and customer satisfaction. Many clients have partnered with Brokers Logistics for five to ten years, and several for twenty or more, proving Jerry's concept assures solid business relationships. With computerized inventory, Internet data support, electronic data interchange (EDI) and bar code capabilities, the company can instantly track the location and status of every item in any of its facilities. This also allows customers to securely access all their account status and product information via the web. In addition, Brokers assists with all modes of transportation whether it be by ground, air, rail or ocean. Local and short haul deliveries are provided directly with Brokers Logistics equipment while the truck brokerage department rapidly obtains nationwide equipment capable of delivery to any destination in the continental U.S. Interchange agreements with Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroads permit coordinated pickups and returns while eliminating costly delays. "You can put a price on space, but not on service," said Jerry, who formerly served on the board of directors of the International Warehouse Logistics Association. "We'll do whatever it takes to maintain and assist our customers and they know it." This steadfast commitment to customer satisfaction carries over to employees, several of whom have been with Brokers Logistics for 15 years, and others as long as 30 years. "If employees aren't happy the company will suffer the consequences," said Jerry. "Staff must be paid fairly, kept informed, openly appreciated and provided with the tools and support to get the job done quickly and efficiently, otherwise morale will nose-dive, quality will lapse and deadlines will be missed. This will not happen at Brokers Logistics." Perks include attractive incentive programs, a recreation hall with television and stereo, basketball courts with company tournaments and regular special event parties (not just holidays). "We make sure employees understand they aren't numbers or cogs in a wheel," said Jerry. "They are genuine assets essential to the bottom line and to our future." Another aspect of Brokers Logistics has been involvement in the community, including local youth education programs and charitable organizations. Brokers recently "adopted" MacArthur School, located in the El Paso Independent School District. Brokers Logistics employees enjoy participating in science fairs, literacy promotions and volunteering to help with Special Olympics. Employees also participate in the "Race for the Cure" in support of the Breast Cancer Foundation. Brokers Logistics maintains the human element with compassion and dedication to the community, including support for The Child Crisis Center, the United Way, and the Alzheimer's Association just to name a few. "Brokers Logistics has the ability to leverage their information technology and management skills in order to act as a leading logistics provider capable of justifying and motivating customers to outsource," said Jerry in regard to their dedication for survival in the fast paced future of logistics. "With the continuation of outsourcing and the expansion into Mexico, we have positioned ourselves to be a very competent, viable logistics solution for any present and future endeavors sought in the marketplace." With forty years of a successful business direction, it appears evident that Brokers Logistics, Ltd. will remain an aggressive and competitive organization within the global arena.
